Univision reporter Salvador Durán was pushed by police while covering an anti-deportation protest in Los Angeles, California, on June 9, 2025.

The protests began June 6 in response to federal raids in and around LA of workplaces and areas where immigrant day laborers gathered, amid the Trump administration’s larger immigration crackdown. After demonstrators clashed with LA law enforcement officers and federal agents, President Donald Trump called in the California National Guard and then the U.S. Marines over the objections of California Gov. Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass.

During a live broadcast on the Univision news program Primer Impacto that was later posted to Facebook, a Los Angeles Police Department officer in riot gear is seen shoving Durán while he is reporting.

“I am with Univision, and I need to do my job,” Durán is heard saying, in Spanish.

The police officer responds, “I know, but I need you to stay right here.”

In another video posted to Facebook, Durán said that he believed he was pushed because the officer felt that they were recording too close to him, even though there were many other journalists in the same area.

After being compelled to withdraw behind the line of police officers, Durán said that in the confusion, another officer directed him to assemble near the protesters.

But even as police dispersed protesters, Durán said, in Spanish: “We, as journalists, assume responsibility, because it is our commitment to be here telling the stories, whatever the case may be.”

When reached for comment, the LAPD directed the Tracker to the department’s social media accounts, where statements and comments would be posted. The account does not appear to have shared any comment concerning the use of physical force or crowd-control munitions on members of the media.
