Members of Congress, state and local lawmakers and rights groups have alleged dire conditions at the facility, which is owned and operated by The Geo Group. The Department of Homeland Security has <a href=\"https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/2059684595470094847?s=20\">denied</a> allegations of detainee mistreatment.</p><p data-block-key=\"29u08\">Federal <a href=\"https://gothamist.com/news/nj-senator-pepper-sprayed-with-protestors-outside-delaney-hall-immigrant-center-in-newark\">officers</a><a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/28/nyregion/delaney-hall-newark-ice-protesters-arrest.html\"> have responded</a> to the protests with chemical irritants, physical force and arrests, as did <a href=\"https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/delaney-hall-ice-protests-dhs-restores-family-visitation/\">state</a> <a href=\"https://gothamist.com/news/newark-sets-curfew-around-ice-jail-after-more-clashes-between-cops-and-protesters\">police</a> in the days that followed.</p><p data-block-key=\"1ubpi\">Bartlett did not comment on the incident for the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker. But in a series of now-expired stories on his Instagram on June 5, viewed by the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, he posted pictures of the damage, and wrote that an ICE officer tried to take his camera and snapped the flash off, claiming he was purposely strobing him.</p><p data-block-key=\"1b0rf\">In one post, he said the officer asked him for his press credentials in exchange for the flash he seized.</p><p data-block-key=\"echq3\">“In the moment I decided he could keep the broken flash so that I may keep my press credentials,” he wrote.</p><p data-block-key=\"cirjt\">Bartlett said the damage will cost several hundred dollars.</p><p data-block-key=\"tfs4\">In a statement emailed to the Tracker on June 1, DHS said anyone who obstructs law enforcement or disrupts its operations would be prosecuted. It did not address its use of force against members of the press.</p><p data-block-key=\"bdfce\">“We remind members of the media to exercise caution as they cover these violent riots and remind journalists that covering unlawful activities in the field does come with risks,” the statement read. “Our officers take every reasonable precaution to mitigate those dangers to those exercising protected First Amendment rights.”</p></div>",

Demonstrators were holding signs in front of the car windows, calling on the employees to quit their jobs and slapping their hands on the vehicles.</p><p data-block-key=\"5f182\">“I think a good four or five cars followed a similar path out at a very constant speed that was slow enough for somebody to move out of the way without harming them,” Pacheco said. “Then this black Mercedes just pumped up the gas and turned their steering wheel directly into me.”</p><p data-block-key=\"52hv6\">In the <a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/p/DZQ0svOIwNw/\">footage</a> Pacheco captured in the moments before they were struck, multiple vehicles can be seen exiting the facility and turning down the road without incident, as they threaded between two lines of protesters. Forty minutes after being hit, Pacheco said they spent an additional 20 minutes waiting for an ambulance that was said to be coming, but ultimately were taken instead by a fellow journalist to a hospital.</p><p data-block-key=\"br881\">“Now it’s about two hours after the incident, and they take about 15 X-rays and a CT scan of my head: no broken bones, no brain bleed, just a lot of soft tissue damage and muscle damage,” they told the Tracker. “I’m in complete shock. My adrenaline is going, I’m cracking jokes, I seem fine. But I’m in pain. They didn’t prescribe me anything.”</p><p data-block-key=\"9oi81\">Pacheco also said that their camera’s lens and lens hood were <a href=\"https://pressfreedomtracker.us/all-incidents/photojournalist-shoved-shot-with-crowd-control-munition-camera-damaged/\">further chipped</a>, and that they lost a flash in the chaos, but that it was picked up by a journalist, so they expect to get it back eventually.</p><p data-block-key=\"aqbb1\">When asked about follow-up treatment they may need, Pacheco said it’s uncertain, because they don’t have health insurance.</p><p data-block-key=\"7b9bo\">“I could go see any number of doctors right now, but I’d have to pay out of pocket, which I guess I should do,” they told the Tracker. “I just … It’s all scary. And money and things are tight.”</p><p data-block-key=\"3c7j2\">Geo Group did not respond to a request for comment.</p></div>",

The Department of Homeland Security has <a href=\"https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/2059684595470094847?s=20\">denied</a> allegations of detainee mistreatment.</p><p data-block-key=\"70mn3\">Wise told the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker that she had been covering the protests since May 29, providing footage to news shows and Storyful, a digital media agency.</p><p data-block-key=\"9qpkg\">On May 31, she arrived at the protest just before a 9 p.m. <a href=\"https://www.newarknj.gov/m/newsflash/Home/Detail/227\">curfew</a> went into effect around the perimeter of Delaney Hall. Wise estimated approximately 20-30 protesters were at an intersection near the facility, outside the perimeter. Facing them were an estimated 200 New Jersey State Police and Newark police officers. Wise said she was standing off to the side with some 20 other journalists.</p><p data-block-key=\"epmma\">Suddenly and without warning, police cars drove from the opposite end of the street toward the protest, and the line of officers started pushing the group of protesters and journalists toward the cars. More officers came forward and eventually formed a semicircle around the group against a wall, kettling them.</p><p data-block-key=\"f9dh7\">Wise said she asked an officer what was happening, and he said everyone was getting arrested, even journalists. After a short time, another officer told the members of the press that they could leave if they had press identification; he then looked at Wise and said, “You’re not a journalist.”</p><p data-block-key=\"8663n\">“It seems like they made the assumption that I wasn’t a journalist, just automatically,” she said. “I felt a little profiled in that moment.”</p><p data-block-key=\"cmu54\">“I had a camera, but I did not have my ID with me,” Wise said. “I don’t think that they really looked at ID for everybody,” she added, but rather let people go if they had a camera rig or visible identification.</p><p data-block-key=\"p9l4\">Independent reporter Chuck Modiano, who was also <a href=\"https://pressfreedomtracker.us/all-incidents/reporter-slammed-to-the-ground-arrested-at-new-jersey-immigration-protest/\">arrested</a> that night, posted a <a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/p/DZBq0oRtJuM/\">video</a> on Instagram of Wise while they both were detained in the kettle.</p></div>\n<div class=\"w-block-instagram block-instagram\"><div class=\"instagram-embed\">\n\t<div>\n <blockquote\n\tclass=\"instagram-media\"\n\tdata-instgrm-permalink=\"https://www.instagram.com/p/DZBq0oRtJuM/?utm_source=ig_embed\"\n\tdata-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n\t<a class=\"btn btn-secondary\" href=\"https://www.instagram.com/p/DZBq0oRtJuM\">View post on Instagram</a>\n</blockquote>\n<script async src=\"https://www.instagram.com/embed.js\"></script>\n\n</div>\n\n</div>\n</div>\n<div class=\"w-block-rich_text block-rich_text\"><p data-block-key=\"uxn45\">Wise told the Tracker that state troopers were grabbing people out of the kettle one by one, tossing them to the ground and arresting them. The troopers then handed them over to the Newark police.</p><p data-block-key=\"c7jpm\">“I just stood there with my hands above my head,” away from the others, waiting for a state trooper to arrest her, Wise said. Eventually, an officer came and aggressively grabbed her, threw her to the ground and put zip ties on her wrists. She said that while she wasn’t injured during the arrest, “It was over the top.”</p><p data-block-key=\"a8417\">Wise said the ties were so tight they left a scar on her wrist over a month later. She added that they had to cut her camera strap to remove her camera after placing her in restraints.</p><p data-block-key=\"chudr\">Wise was put in a police bus along with the other protesters and journalists and taken to a nearby station for processing. At least three other journalists were <a href=\"https://pressfreedomtracker.us/all-incidents/?date_lower=2026-05-01&state=New+Jersey&categories=Arrest%2FCriminal+Charge\">violently arrested</a> that night.</p><p data-block-key=\"fmu3h\">At the station, she continued to tell officers that she was a journalist, but “it was clear that they weren’t going to do anything about it.”</p><p data-block-key=\"701c7\">Wise said she was confined to a holding cell with 29 women, despite having a capacity for just 14.</p><p data-block-key=\"bl6dn\">Newark police processed those arrested very slowly, she said. She was finally released at around 5 p.m. on June 1, after more than 20 hours in custody.</p><p data-block-key=\"bcmam\">Wise was initially charged with resisting arrest and rioting, according to her and to court records reviewed by the Tracker. On June 8, the resisting arrest charge was dismissed and the rioting charge was downgraded to a misdemeanor failure to disperse. Wise said she has a court appearance on Aug. 6.</p><p data-block-key=\"5km86\">She added that while she was detained, her car was towed and she received a ticket for parking illegally, which she disputed. Because the car was a rental, she had to go through extra steps to get it back.</p><p data-block-key=\"a1718\">Wise said the experience made her “think twice” about reporting on situations like Delaney Hall and realize that she needs to be more cautious.</p><p data-block-key=\"77emk\">The New Jersey State Police Office of Public Information and the Newark Police Division did not respond to emailed requests for comment.</p><p data-block-key=\"2hjm3\">In a <a href=\"https://x.com/NewJerseyOAG/status/2061289986092138550?s=20\">statement posted to X</a> on May 31, New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport wrote that state police cleared the area outside Delaney Hall because a group of people refused to leave after the curfew order. She did not address the use of force against or arrest of members of the press.</p></div>",

The Department of Homeland Security has <a href=\"https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/2059684595470094847?s=20\">denied</a> allegations of detainee mistreatment.</p><p data-block-key=\"6l4as\">Nealis, who holds a journalism degree and has worked in video production, said he went to Delaney Hall to document the protests over two weeks, and his footage was picked up by at least one mainstream media outlet.</p><p data-block-key=\"3613d\">“My intention for covering the Delaney Hall protest was because I have a journalism background, and to film it and post it and be as impartial as possible,” he told the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker.</p><p data-block-key=\"digsr\">At one point during the protest, state police in riot gear rushed the intersection and surrounded the crowd in a police kettle.</p><p data-block-key=\"3mffd\">Officers reviewed press credentials individually and allowed credentialed journalists to leave. Nealis, who was filming on his cellphone while supporting a credentialed journalist, was also identified as a member of the media and permitted to leave.</p><p data-block-key=\"63n7t\">Roughly 45 minutes later, the police response changed.</p><p data-block-key=\"ena11\">Nealis <a href=\"https://x.com/Patrick_Nealis/status/2061260668108448172?s=20\">gathered with a group of mostly journalists</a> on a grassy hill overlooking the protest, physically separated from demonstrators in the street. Instead of moving first toward the crowd below, Nealis said an officer sprinted directly toward the area where press were standing and charged at him with a riot shield.</p><p data-block-key=\"fs528\">“He hit me so hard, it knocked me to the ground and knocked my phone out of my hand, and I rolled down the hill to the sidewalk,” said Nealis, who suffered a skinned knee. “It was very aggressive.”</p><p data-block-key=\"844l1\">Before the assault, the officer did not give Nealis an opportunity to identify himself. Instead, he forced the reporter to the ground and zip-tied his wrists. Wearing a press vest, Modiano approached officers and identified himself as a journalist. But because he did not have his credentials with him, he was not allowed to leave.</p><p data-block-key=\"2gu0p\">“It seemed like it was very arbitrary,” Modiano said of the rules officers were using to determine who could leave. The zip ties remained on for about four hours, said Papp, who experienced limited mobility in his right hand for several days and still had bruising on his wrists more than a week later.</p><p data-block-key=\"9c58k\">“They were on there as about as tight as they could pull them,” Papp said.</p><p data-block-key=\"6q3r8\">While Papp was being taken into custody, officers also threw his tripod across the street, removed his gas mask from his bag and confiscated his other equipment. While his confiscated gear was later returned, he has not recovered his lost tripod or gas mask.</p><p data-block-key=\"eo39f\">Papp said his experience with law enforcement on May 31 has changed how he approaches covering protests.</p><p data-block-key=\"avn5b\">“I’m definitely more cautious about getting close to any police action,” he said. “I’m a little more hesitant about getting in there to get quality footage.”</p><p data-block-key=\"dg6f4\">Papp and <a href=\"https://pressfreedomtracker.us/all-incidents/?date_lower=2026-05-31&date_upper=2026-05-31&city=newark&categories=Arrest%2FCriminal+Charge\">at least two other journalists</a> were taken to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark, operated by the sheriff’s office, and released the following day.</p><p data-block-key=\"ekalc\">According to Papp, the New Jersey State Police made the arrest, while Newark police are listed as filing the charges. He was initially charged with rioting and resisting arrest. Prosecutors later reduced the rioting charge to failure to disperse and dropped the resisting arrest charge. Although Strasberg was carrying a bag labeled press, he did not have a formal credential and was told to remain inside the kettle.</p><p data-block-key=\"dpv4q\">“They didn’t bother to check anything, they just said, ’You’re not real press, you can’t leave,’” Strasberg said. “They did let a bunch of press leave. I have no idea why I was targeted.”</p><p data-block-key=\"4cimv\">Strasberg said he had repeatedly identified himself as a journalist to officers throughout the evening and earlier in the day while covering the protest, and that some officers had previously acknowledged him as press. While kettled, he showed officers his social media accounts, videos he had recorded and examples of past coverage on his phone.</p><p data-block-key=\"4ejkl\">“I continuously tried to get my way out of there, but they couldn’t care less,” Strasberg said.</p><p data-block-key=\"f6i1t\">When it became clear he would be arrested, Strasberg said he complied with the officers’ commands. Instead, officers forced him to the ground.</p><p data-block-key=\"brthh\">“I still had my hands up, and one of them just punched me in the face,” Strasberg recalled.</p><p data-block-key=\"ckp20\">The blow left one side of Strasberg’s face badly swollen, making it difficult to open his eye. During the arrest, Strasberg’s glasses fell off and were stepped on by an officer, though Strasberg said he does not know whether that was intentional. Despite his facial injuries, he said he was denied medical treatment for more than seven hours.</p><p data-block-key=\"13aah\">Strasberg also said officers fastened his zip-tie restraints so tightly that they cut off circulation to his hands, made his wrists sore for days and left “a bit of a scar” on one wrist more than a week later. Pacheco — who has been arrested while covering protests on <a href=\"https://pressfreedomtracker.us/all-incidents/?date_upper=2026-05-30&targeted_journalists=Josh+Pacheco&categories=Arrest%2FCriminal+Charge\">at least four previous occasions</a> — said the circumstances were particularly alarming.</p><p data-block-key=\"8ss7l\">“The second that they encircled us, I was ready to send my last wishes, last love notes to my loved ones,” they told the Tracker. “It felt like I was about to die, because there were so many divisions of law enforcement, and it was so overpowering.”</p><p data-block-key=\"7mo6q\">The photojournalist was shoved multiple times as the crowd was corralled. That’s when two officers carrying riot shields shoved him from behind. </p><p data-block-key=\"75nvp\">Officers then screamed, “Move! Move! Move!” </p><p data-block-key=\"dg9oe\">After the encounter, Peters relocated farther from police lines to continue documenting events. About 10 minutes later, officers in riot gear advanced toward Peter and another photojournalist, who was also displaying credentials. The officers continued ordering them to leave and chased them to their cars. </p><p data-block-key=\"4edmr\">“They were still coming after us, and so I felt like it didn’t matter that we were press,” Peters said. “I thought it was targeted in a certain way.”</p><p data-block-key=\"bfki6\">Peters said he didn’t take off his protective flak jacket and barely had time to remove his camera equipment before feeling pressured to drive away. It held a camera, two lenses, six external storage cards, six external batteries and other gear, as well as a keychain with an Apple AirTag — clearly labeled with her name and contact information.</p><p data-block-key=\"bhngn\">She sought assistance from medics at the scene, who provided her with a wheelchair. With the help of other journalists, she went back to the front line and negotiated with state police in riot gear to let her through to retrieve her bag and seek further medical care, in a scene captured on <a href=\"https://x.com/StatusCoup/status/2061146145938710978\">video</a>.</p><p data-block-key=\"161r\">However, the bag was no longer there.</p><p data-block-key=\"7dmdt\">“I checked my AirTag and the bag was already on a highway pretty far away at that point,” Katsanis, who was treated at a nearby hospital, <a href=\"https://apnews.com/article/delaney-hall-new-jersey-immigration-fd0ff7bfbae8585bba35c7b88bfe9eb0\">told The Associated Press</a>. “Right away, I had a feeling it was the police because they were the only ones with access to that area.”</p><p data-block-key=\"bv8a\">She continued to track the bag to a house in Sparta, New Jersey, which was later determined to be Brown’s residence.</p><p data-block-key=\"9lnpn\">Katsanis <a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/04/nyregion/delaney-hall-protest-officer-charged-stealing.html\">told The New York Times</a> that her boyfriend and another photographer tracked down the AirTag, eventually locating it — without the other items — on the side of the road, with her name and contact information still clearly legible.</p><p data-block-key=\"7rmm7\">“That was a pretty clear sign to me that this was a theft and not just a law enforcement officer holding onto this bag for safekeeping,” she told the Times.</p><p data-block-key=\"120aj\">After Katsanis contacted police, a search of Brown’s residence found some of the gear she had reported missing, “including several items that still had the victim’s name and phone number printed on labels affixed to them,” according to the attorney general’s statement.</p><p data-block-key=\"ajkmj\">The statement added that Brown had been assigned to the Delaney Hall area in an official capacity on May 30, and his body-worn camera “shows him interacting with a dark colored bag, consistent with the description of the victim’s belongings.”</p><p data-block-key=\"f8ji0\">Brown faces one count of third-degree theft, which carries a sentence of three to five years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000, the attorney general’s office said. He is set to appear in court on July 7, according to a complaint reviewed by the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker.</p><p data-block-key=\"chdmc\">A <a href=\"https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-angelina-after-delaney-hall-attack\">GoFundMe</a> set up to assist Katsanis had raised nearly $20,000 as of June 10. In addition to the costs of replacing her equipment, it also listed expenses related to replacing her car and house keys, accessing and towing her car, and medical care.</p><p data-block-key=\"utmm\">Katsanis’ attorney, Wylie Stecklow, told the Tracker on June 8 that the authorities still had possession of her equipment as evidence, “but we are hoping to get them back in the next week or so.”</p><p data-block-key=\"5p6sq\">Stecklow praised the response of the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office to the theft of her bag.</p><p data-block-key=\"3cs0r\">“The NJAG office took this very seriously and within two days of us first contacting them, they had obtained a search warrant, executed it, and arrested the individual,” he said.</p><p data-block-key=\"bdeo5\">Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens II said Brown had been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation. “Conduct that undermines the public’s trust in law enforcement is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”</p></div>",

The Department of Homeland Security has <a href=\"https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/2059684595470094847?s=20\">denied</a> allegations of detainee mistreatment.</p><p data-block-key=\"3vokv\">Federal <a href=\"https://gothamist.com/news/nj-senator-pepper-sprayed-with-protestors-outside-delaney-hall-immigrant-center-in-newark\">officers</a> <a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/28/nyregion/delaney-hall-newark-ice-protesters-arrest.html\">responded</a> to the protests with chemical irritants, physical force and arrests, as did <a href=\"https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/delaney-hall-ice-protests-dhs-restores-family-visitation/\">state</a> <a href=\"https://gothamist.com/news/newark-sets-curfew-around-ice-jail-after-more-clashes-between-cops-and-protesters\">police</a> in the days that followed. </p><p data-block-key=\"71nfn\">Despite being <a href=\"https://pressfreedomtracker.us/all-incidents/photojournalist-trampled-shoulder-injured-at-new-jersey-immigration-protest/\">injured in a stampede</a> at a protest outside Delaney Hall days earlier, Leshowitz told the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker she felt it was important to return May 30. </p><p data-block-key=\"ceurr\">When she arrived, New Jersey State Police, Essex County sheriff’s deputies and Newark police officers in riot gear lined the protest. Mounted state police patrolled nearby. During the protest, a flash-bang grenade bounced off her head. Leshowitz said she did not see the state police officer who fired it and could not say whether it was aimed at her. She was wearing press credentials and carrying a camera at the time.</p><p data-block-key=\"917c5\">“It hit my head. If it did go off, it could have been bad,” she said. “And just the fact that they were OK with that.” </p><p data-block-key=\"afkm\">The barrage of tear gas also burned her eyes and made it difficult to breathe. Leshowitz, who has asthma, said she repeatedly flushed her eyes as officers continued deploying chemical irritants. </p><p data-block-key=\"3pmiu\">“I had a mask. Members of Congress, state and local lawmakers and rights groups have alleged dire conditions at the facility.</p><p data-block-key=\"3jqmt\">Federal<a href=\"https://gothamist.com/news/nj-senator-pepper-sprayed-with-protestors-outside-delaney-hall-immigrant-center-in-newark\"> officers</a><a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/28/nyregion/delaney-hall-newark-ice-protesters-arrest.html\"> responded</a> to the protests with chemical irritants, physical force and arrests.</p><p data-block-key=\"c45qi\">The Department of Homeland Security has<a href=\"https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/2059684595470094847?s=20\"> denied</a> allegations of detainee mistreatment.</p><p data-block-key=\"gmjr\">Pacheco told the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker that they had been covering the protests for several days by May 30 and that day was by far the most brutal, with officers from both Immigration and Customs Enforcement and New Jersey State Police at the scene.</p><p data-block-key=\"ddv2k\">“They were firing directly at press and activists, like, point-blank pepper balls to the stomach for one press person that I documented myself,” they said. “And I was shot in the calf and in the shin.”</p><p data-block-key=\"7k42n\">The photojournalist added that the targeting also extended to the use of tear gas and stun grenades, which Pacheco said were repeatedly shot or thrown directly at press and their feet.</p><p data-block-key=\"1m59t\">“The tear gas was just so, so much. I had to have my eyes flushed four times on Saturday,” they told the Tracker.</p><p data-block-key=\"9vk1s\">Pacheco was also repeatedly shoved with a metal barricade by a state police officer, who was using it to push the crowd back or knock them to the ground. It just changed faces and, if anything, amped up even more.”</p><p data-block-key=\"tj9d\">They emphasized, however, that the extent of the aggression from federal officers was much higher.</p><p data-block-key=\"e2hdh\">“ICE seemed to be so much more deranged, more angry, and there’s less restrictions on what they’re able to do in terms of enacting violence on civilians,” Pacheco said, “whereas riot cops have done this before and there is sort of a playbook that they go by when they are enacting aggression like this.”</p><p data-block-key=\"4pqem\">The New Jersey State Police Office of Public Information did not respond to an emailed request for comment.</p><p data-block-key=\"7jn8g\">In a <a href=\"https://x.com/NewJerseyOAG/status/2060942858408833236/photo/1\">statement posted to X</a> early May 31, New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport wrote that state and local law enforcement had responded to “aggressive actions” outside Delaney Hall. Whoa! Whoa! Stop! Stop! Stop! Stop! Press! Press! Press!’”</p><p data-block-key=\"5acfp\">Constantine told the Tracker one of the officers responded, “I don’t give a fuck. Shut the fuck up!”</p><p data-block-key=\"3c8ag\">Then, while the photojournalist was still on the ground, the officer prepared to lunge forward with the barricade again. Members of Congress, state and local lawmakers and rights groups have alleged dire conditions at the facility.</p><p data-block-key=\"dbjaq\">Federal <a href=\"https://gothamist.com/news/nj-senator-pepper-sprayed-with-protestors-outside-delaney-hall-immigrant-center-in-newark\">officers</a> <a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/28/nyregion/delaney-hall-newark-ice-protesters-arrest.html\">responded</a> to the protests with chemical irritants, physical force and arrests, as did <a href=\"https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/delaney-hall-ice-protests-dhs-restores-family-visitation/\">state</a> <a href=\"https://gothamist.com/news/newark-sets-curfew-around-ice-jail-after-more-clashes-between-cops-and-protesters\">police</a> in the days that followed.</p><p data-block-key=\"5480c\">The Department of Homeland Security has <a href=\"https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/2059684595470094847?s=20\">denied</a> allegations of detainee mistreatment.</p><p data-block-key=\"2rilp\">Allen-DuPraw told the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker that he was on assignment for Status Coup on May 30, documenting the New Jersey State Police response to protests outside the facility that night.</p><p data-block-key=\"f20np\">“At one point there was a 30-to-50-foot gap between the main line of protesters and the line of police,” he said, “and I was somewhere in the middle of that gap — forward from the protesters, but not at the police line by any means — and was standing fairly still, taking photos, when all of a sudden a series of flash bangs went off at my feet.”</p><p data-block-key=\"9fag0\">He said that at least three stun grenades exploded at his feet, and that he could feel shrapnel brush past his pant legs.</p><p data-block-key=\"9k2sb\">“I could feel the force of them at my ankle, and then, of course, my ears were ringing from it as well,” Allen-DuPraw added.</p><p data-block-key=\"7atfd\">Later that evening, the photojournalist was targeted again.</p><p data-block-key=\"ev5fc\">He told the Tracker he was standing in the gap between protesters and police, as were two or three protesters at a distance from him. "body": "<div class=\"w-block-rich_text block-rich_text\"><p data-block-key=\"frblf\">New Brunswick Today was ordered by a New Jersey state court to remove footage from its website and YouTube on May 29, 2026, following a complaint by the New Brunswick Board of Education.</p><p data-block-key=\"1o4bs\">According to court filings reviewed by the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, the footage obtained by the newspaper and published May 28 was taken by surveillance cameras at New Brunswick High School, and showed a student entering the building and triggering the alarm on a metal detector. The student was searched by security and was found to be carrying a concealed weapon.</p><p data-block-key=\"bnl40\">“The district has reason to believe that the footage was recorded from a computer by an individual with access to the district’s surveillance system and disseminated without authorization,” Aubrey Johnson, superintendent of the school district, wrote in an affidavit.</p><p data-block-key=\"d84kn\">Johnson argued that the release of the footage could violate student privacy rights and reveal security-related information about the school facilities.</p><p data-block-key=\"enqbc\">The day the footage was published, an attorney for the board of education emailed the news outlet’s founder and editor, Charlie Kratovil, demanding that he immediately remove the video, lest the matter be brought before a judge. The attorney also asked Kratovil to disclose how he obtained the footage.</p><p data-block-key=\"1doo5\">Kratovil refused.</p><p data-block-key=\"e9bbi\">A case was filed with the Superior Court for Middlesex County the following day, asking for the removal of the footage and to restrain the newspaper “from any and all future postings of confidential school security/surveillance video” from schools in the district.</p><p data-block-key=\"cvq5i\">Superior Court Judge Thomas McCloskey <a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xPQN1gWsfc\">temporarily granted</a> the district’s requests during an emergency hearing May 29, additionally stipulating from the bench that even publishing descriptions of what was seen in the video would violate his order.</p><p data-block-key=\"7raeq\">Attorneys representing New Brunswick Today filed a request June 5 to appeal the order and have the restraints lifted, but the state’s Appellate Division denied their request, stating that they had not filed a motion to dissolve the restraints with the lower court. The paper’s attorneys filed such a request with the Superior Court on June 10.</p><p data-block-key=\"5ijj3\">“The United States Supreme Court has repeatedly made it clear that prior restraints are the least tolerable infringement on First Amendment rights,” they wrote. “Ordering content to be removed from the internet and enjoining future publications are unequivocally prior restraints that must be analyzed under the prior restraint doctrine, which this Court ignored.”</p><p data-block-key=\"fnpf\">The parties are not scheduled to appear until July 7 to argue whether the court should order permanent restraints on the newspaper and whether the temporary restraints should be dissolved.</p><p data-block-key=\"e5tae\">But in a June 11 letter to the judge, the newspaper’s attorney Bruce Rosen asked that the hearing be moved to June 15. He argued that the delay violated the judge’s own order stipulating that the motion could be heard within three business days, as well as the Appellate Division’s decision, which requires that it be heard “expeditiously.”</p><p data-block-key=\"4kcep\">After the judge again refused to hear the matter sooner, Rosen filed emergency motions June 12 with both the Appellate Division and, when that too was denied, the New Jersey Supreme Court. He asked that the prior restraint be lifted while the motion to dismiss is pending or that the motion be heard the week of June 15.</p></div>",

"body": "<div class=\"w-block-rich_text block-rich_text\"><p data-block-key=\"cba3q\">Freelance photojournalist Bruce Cotler was shoved over a concrete barricade by state police and threatened with arrest while covering a protest outside an immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey, on May 29, 2026.</p><p data-block-key=\"fktj7\">Protests outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility <a href=\"https://whyy.org/articles/new-jersey-newark-ice-detention-center-protest/\">began</a> May 22, when many detainees went on a <a href=\"https://newjerseymonitor.com/2026/05/22/delaney-hall-hunger-strike/\">hunger strike</a>. Members of Congress, state and local lawmakers and rights groups have alleged dire conditions at the facility. The Department of Homeland Security has <a href=\"https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/2059684595470094847?s=20\">denied</a> allegations of detainee mistreatment.</p><p data-block-key=\"9i2r0\">Federal <a href=\"https://gothamist.com/news/nj-senator-pepper-sprayed-with-protestors-outside-delaney-hall-immigrant-center-in-newark\">officers</a> have <a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/28/nyregion/delaney-hall-newark-ice-protesters-arrest.html\">responded</a> to the protests with chemical irritants, physical force and arrests, as did <a href=\"https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/delaney-hall-ice-protests-dhs-restores-family-visitation/\">state</a> <a href=\"https://gothamist.com/news/newark-sets-curfew-around-ice-jail-after-more-clashes-between-cops-and-protesters\">police</a> in the days that followed.</p><p data-block-key=\"8ejkk\">Cotler told the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker that the protest was peaceful until New Jersey State Police moved in to clear the area outside Delaney Hall.</p></div>\n<div class=\"w-block-instagram block-instagram\"><div class=\"instagram-embed\">\n\t<div>\n <blockquote\n\tclass=\"instagram-media\"\n\tdata-instgrm-permalink=\"https://www.instagram.com/p/DY-ymSFpjz2/?utm_source=ig_embed\"\n\tdata-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n\t<a class=\"btn btn-secondary\" href=\"https://www.instagram.com/p/DY-ymSFpjz2\">View post on Instagram</a>\n</blockquote>\n<script async src=\"https://www.instagram.com/embed.js\"></script>\n\n</div>\n\n</div>\n</div>\n<div class=\"w-block-rich_text block-rich_text\"><p data-block-key=\"cba3q\">As police wielding riot shields pushed people away from the detention center, an officer shoved Cotler with enough force to send him backward over a concrete barricade.</p><p data-block-key=\"1dm82\">“I was hit so hard that it knocked me out of my sneakers,” he said.</p><p data-block-key=\"en49r\">A colleague saw him fall and called two others over to help him up. Cotler said he feared he would be arrested if the police had reached him before fellow journalists did. He said he was wearing visible press credentials at the time and believed the shove was targeted.</p><p data-block-key=\"27ap2\">“I wanted them to know that I was press, and they just had radar lock,” he said. “They didn’t care who it was, they just went brutal.”</p><p data-block-key=\"c3lvk\">The fall left Cotler bruised and chipped the screen of the cellphone he was using to record the protest. He said his phone has not operated the same since. Days later, he discovered a large bruise on his side from striking the pavement.</p><p data-block-key=\"ctvj9\">Throughout the night, officers deployed tear gas and pepper spray into the crowd, affecting Cotler despite his use of personal protective equipment. He said police also shined bright lights directly into camera lenses, obstructing his and other journalists’ abilities to document the scene.</p><p data-block-key=\"19e8l\">After officers announced over a loudspeaker that people should leave the area, Cotler said an officer threatened him with arrest when he tried to return to his nearby vehicle.</p><p data-block-key=\"9ndb9\">Cotler, a veteran photojournalist and president of the New York Press Photographers Association, said he was contributing images to Zuma Press that day, some of which were later distributed by Reuters.</p><p data-block-key=\"carmp\">“I’ve been to many riots over the years and this was definitely the worst that was handled,” he said. “They were just out — in my opinion — for blood.”</p><p data-block-key=\"3ton3\">The New Jersey State Police Office of Public Information did not respond to an emailed request for comment.</p><p data-block-key=\"ar1pl\">In a <a href=\"https://x.com/NewJerseyOAG/status/2060579670639149195?s=20\">statement posted to X</a> early May 30, New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport wrote that state police were clearing the area outside Delaney Hall because a small number of people were blocking the pathway for law enforcement vehicles. It did not address the use of force against members of the press.</p></div>",
